Wondering how much protein on GLP-1 treatment is enough? It is one of the first questions people ask once semaglutide or tirzepatide lowers their appetite, because protein helps protect muscle when you eat less overall. Use the calculator below for an estimated daily range based on your body weight, then read how the numbers are derived.

Key takeaways

  • About 1.2-1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight per day is commonly cited for adults losing weight to help preserve lean mass; it is an estimate, not a prescription.
  • Spreading protein across the day helps; the Leidy review points to at least about 25-30 g per meal, which also makes the daily range easier to reach.
  • Kidney disease and other conditions change the picture, so your provider or a registered dietitian personalizes any protein goal.

Daily protein estimate

This calculator shows a general range based on your body weight, using 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram per day, a range commonly cited for adults losing weight who want to help preserve lean mass. It is an estimate for discussion, not a prescription. Your provider or a registered dietitian personalizes it, especially if you have kidney disease.

Why protein matters when appetite drops

Weight loss is never only fat; a share is lean mass, including muscle, even with diet alone. In an exploratory body composition analysis of STEP 1 (140 participants), total fat mass fell by an average of about 19% and lean mass by about 10% with the weight-management dose of semaglutide. In the SURMOUNT-1 body composition substudy (160 participants), about three-quarters of the weight lost was fat and about one-quarter was lean mass, in both the tirzepatide and placebo groups.

These are study averages from small substudies and individual results vary, but the direction is consistent: protecting muscle takes deliberate effort, and a smaller appetite makes protein easy to under-eat without noticing.

How much protein on GLP-1 treatment: how the range is derived

Protein needs are expressed as grams per kilogram of body weight per day. A review by Leidy and colleagues in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2015) summarizes evidence that higher-protein diets of about 1.2-1.6 g/kg/day support weight management, including better preservation of lean mass during energy restriction. For comparison, the Recommended Dietary Allowance for healthy adults with minimal physical activity is 0.8 g/kg/day. For a 90 kg (about 198 lb) adult, that is roughly 108-144 g per day; the calculator does the same arithmetic for your weight.

Some clinicians use an adjusted or ideal body weight for a higher BMI, which lowers the estimate, and kidney or liver disease changes protein needs entirely. The calculator gives an estimate, not a prescription; your provider decides.

How much protein on GLP-1 per meal?

The Leidy review suggests meal-specific amounts of at least about 25-30 g of protein, and many clinicians add a protein-rich snack. On a GLP-1 this is also practical: a 40 g dinner may be more than you can finish, but 25-30 g at 3 meals plus a yogurt is often manageable.

Protein sources: approximate grams per serving

Figures are approximate, from USDA FoodData Central, and vary by brand and preparation; fried or fatty preparations may worsen nausea.

Source Serving Protein (approx.)
Chicken breast, cooked 3 oz 26 g
Salmon, cooked 3 oz 19-22 g
Canned tuna in water, drained 3 oz 20-22 g
Egg, large 1 6 g
Greek yogurt, plain, nonfat 6 oz 16 g
Cottage cheese, 2% 1/2 cup (4 oz) 12 g
Tofu, firm (calcium-set) 1/2 cup 22 g
Lentils, cooked 1 cup 18 g

When appetite is very low

Around a dose increase, some days a full meal will not happen. Shift the goal from meals to protein.

  • Go smaller and more often. Five or six small eating occasions can match the protein of 3 meals.
  • Use protein-rich fluids. Milk, kefir, a plain protein shake or a Greek yogurt smoothie often go down more easily than solid food.
  • Protein first, kept bland. Eggs, cottage cheese, soups and poached fish tend to sit better than heavy or fried options.

If low appetite comes with repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down or severe abdominal pain, contact your provider promptly. Call 911 in an emergency.

Strength training to protect muscle

Protein maintains muscle only if the muscle is used. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend muscle-strengthening activity for all major muscle groups on 2 or more days a week; many clinicians suggest 2-3 short sessions on a GLP-1. Start light, and ask your provider first if you have heart or joint conditions. Our guide to what to eat on a GLP-1 covers the full plate and a sample day.

Signs you may be under-eating protein

Low protein intake does not announce itself, but these clues deserve a conversation with your provider:

  • Unusual fatigue, weakness or a noticeable loss of strength in workouts.
  • Hair shedding (hair loss is also listed as a side effect in both the Wegovy® and Zepbound® labels).

These signs have many causes, so do not self-diagnose; your provider can review your intake and order labs if needed.

How Forever Health Rx follow-up works

Forever Health Rx is a telemedicine platform where licensed providers evaluate adults for GLP-1 treatment. If a provider prescribes semaglutide or tirzepatide, you stay in contact through the patient portal as your dose is adjusted.

Read what to expect in your first month on a GLP-1 or how to handle common semaglutide side effects, or start your health assessment when you are ready. Submitting a visit does not guarantee a prescription; a licensed provider decides after reviewing your health history.

Talk it through with a licensed provider

Your evaluation is 100% online. A licensed provider reviews your health history and decides whether treatment is medically appropriate. Submitting an evaluation does not guarantee a prescription.

Frequently asked questions

How much protein should I eat on semaglutide?

There is no single number. About 1.2-1.6 g per kg of body weight per day is commonly cited for adults losing weight, and your provider or a registered dietitian personalizes it, especially with kidney disease or a higher BMI.

Can I eat too much protein on a GLP-1?

More is not automatically better. Very high intakes are unnecessary and may crowd out fiber on a small appetite, and people with kidney disease need individual guidance. Ask your provider before going well above the estimate.

Are protein shakes okay on tirzepatide?

A plain protein shake or drinkable yogurt can be a practical bridge on low-appetite days, though whole foods should still make up most of your intake. Forever Health Rx does not sell or recommend products; check with your provider first.

Should I use my current weight or goal weight in the calculator?

The calculator uses your current weight for a general estimate; some clinicians prefer an adjusted body weight for a higher BMI, which gives a lower number. Either way, use the result as a starting point for a conversation with your provider, not a target.
