What it may help with

The benefits of Lipo-C

B12 is the vitamin your nerves, brain and blood cells can't function without, and Lipo-C pairs it with nutrients involved in processing fat. Alongside diet and activity, it may help support:

  • Fat to fuel

L-carnitine helps carry fatty acids into your cells' mitochondria to be used for energy.

  • Energy metabolism

B12 and B-complex vitamins help turn food into usable energy.

  • Liver support

Choline helps your liver package and move fat.

  • Nerve health

B12 supports normal brain and nerve function.

  • Pairs with your GLP-1 plan

Can be added alongside GLP-1 treatment if your provider decides it fits.

Individual results vary. Benefits are not guaranteed and depend on your provider's evaluation and your plan. Evidence for wellness uses is limited.

Understanding Lipo-C

What to know first.

Regulatory status

Not FDA-approved for any use. No lipotropic (MIC) injection, with or without L-carnitine or B vitamins, is FDA-approved for weight loss or any other use. On its own, levocarnitine (L-carnitine) injection is FDA-approved for carnitine deficiency caused by certain inherited metabolic disorders and for carnitine deficiency in people with end-stage kidney disease on dialysis, and cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) injection, an ingredient in some Lipo-C formulas, is FDA-approved for B12 deficiency caused by poor absorption. Those approvals apply to the single-ingredient products, not to this compounded blend. A licensed provider reviews your health history, current medicines and goals, explains what is and is not known, and decides whether it may be appropriate for you.

How it works

Formulas sold as Lipo-C vary between pharmacies; the exact ingredients are listed on the pharmacy label and are reviewed by your provider. They commonly combine methionine, an amino acid the body also uses to make carnitine; inositol, which takes part in cell signaling; choline, which the body needs to build cell membranes, to make acetylcholine (a chemical messenger in the nervous system) and to carry fats out of the liver; and L-carnitine, which helps move long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria, the parts of cells where they are broken down in normal metabolism. Some formulas also contain B vitamins, such as vitamin B12. Healthy adults usually make enough carnitine on their own, evidence that lipotropic injections help with weight or energy is limited, and results vary.

Who it may be for

A provider may consider Lipo-C for some adults after reviewing their health history, current medicines and goals. It is not for anyone allergic to any ingredient in the preparation, including cobalt or vitamin B12 if the formula contains B12, and people with a seizure disorder, kidney disease or Leber's disease (a hereditary optic nerve condition) need special caution; its safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established through FDA review. Your provider decides.

What is Lipo-C?

Lipo-C is a compounded lipotropic injection. Formulas vary between pharmacies; they commonly combine methionine, inositol and choline, often called MIC, with L-carnitine, and some add B vitamins such as vitamin B12. Lipo-C is prepared for an individual patient by a state-licensed pharmacy and is prescribed only if a licensed provider decides it is appropriate.

How do I know exactly what is in my Lipo-C?

The exact ingredients are listed on the pharmacy label of the preparation you receive. Before prescribing, your provider reviews the formula the dispensing pharmacy prepares, along with your health history, allergies and current medicines. If you have questions about any ingredient, ask your provider or the pharmacy before you use it.

Is Lipo-C FDA-approved?

No. No lipotropic (MIC) injection is FDA-approved for weight loss or any other use. Levocarnitine (L-carnitine) is FDA-approved on its own for specific types of carnitine deficiency, but that approval does not extend to this compounded blend. The FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness or quality, and Lipo-C is not a generic version of, or equivalent to, any branded medication.

Will Lipo-C help with weight or energy?

No outcome is promised. Evidence that lipotropic injections help with weight or energy is limited, and the combination has not been reviewed by the FDA. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements describes study results on L-carnitine and weight as equivocal, says larger studies are needed, and notes that healthy adults make enough carnitine on their own. Your provider explains what is and is not known, and results vary.

What side effects are possible?

The side effects of the combined injection have not been well studied, and the FDA has not reviewed its safety. For levocarnitine, the FDA label reports nausea, vomiting, body odor and stomach inflammation, and seizures and serious allergic reactions have also been reported. High intakes of choline have been linked to a fishy body odor, vomiting, sweating and low blood pressure. Report side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or www.fda.gov/medwatch. In an emergency, call 911.

How is Lipo-C given, and who sets the dose?

If a provider prescribes it, Lipo-C is given as an injection into a muscle. Your provider sets the dose and how often to use it, and the pharmacy label gives your directions. This page does not give dosing information. Never share needles or vials, and follow the pharmacy's storage and disposal instructions.

Does completing an online visit mean I will be prescribed Lipo-C?

No. Completing an online visit or paying does not mean a prescription will be issued. A licensed provider reviews your health history, medicines and goals and decides whether Lipo-C, another option or no treatment is right for you. If it is not appropriate, you will be told why. Not everyone qualifies.

Important Safety Information — Lipo-C Injection

Compounded drug notice

Compounded Lipo-C is prepared for an individual patient by a state-licensed pharmacy under a prescription from a licensed provider; its exact formula is set by the dispensing pharmacy and listed on the pharmacy label. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality. Compounded Lipo-C is not a generic version of, or equivalent to, any branded medication. Prescription required. Not everyone qualifies. Individual results vary.

Do not use if

  • You are allergic to methionine, inositol, choline, L-carnitine or any other ingredient in the compounded preparation
  • Your formula contains vitamin B12 and you are sensitive (allergic) to cobalt or vitamin B12

Before starting, tell your provider if

  • You have a seizure disorder or have ever had a seizure
  • You have kidney disease or are on dialysis (L-carnitine can cause muscle weakness in people with uremia, and its byproducts can build up when the kidneys do not work well)
  • You take warfarin (an increase in INR, a blood-clotting test, has been reported with levocarnitine)
  • You take valproic acid or other seizure medicines such as phenobarbital, phenytoin or carbamazepine (these can lower carnitine levels)
  • Your formula contains vitamin B12 and you have Leber's disease (hereditary optic nerve atrophy)
  • You take any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, vitamins or supplements, including folic acid or other B vitamins
  • You have had an allergic reaction to any medicine
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding

Serious side effects — get medical help right away

  • Serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, swelling of the voice box (laryngeal edema) and tightening of the airways (bronchospasm), have been reported with levocarnitine, mostly in people on dialysis, and anaphylactic shock and death have been reported after vitamin B12 injections. Stop using Lipo-C and get emergency help (call 911) for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a widespread rash or hives.
  • Seizures. Seizures have been reported in people receiving levocarnitine, with or without a history of seizures, and people who already have seizures have reported more frequent or more severe seizures. Get emergency help (call 911) for a seizure.
  • Optic nerve damage in Leber's disease (formulas with vitamin B12). People with early Leber's disease (hereditary optic nerve atrophy) who were treated with cyanocobalamin have had severe and rapid optic nerve damage.

Common side effects

Common side effects: the side effects of the combined Lipo-C injection have not been well studied, and the FDA has not reviewed its safety. For levocarnitine, the FDA label reports short-lived nausea and vomiting and, less often, body odor and stomach inflammation (gastritis). High intakes of choline have been linked to a fishy body odor, vomiting, excessive sweating and salivation, and low blood pressure. If your formula contains vitamin B12, mild, short-lived diarrhea, itching and a temporary rash have been reported with B12 injection. Tell your provider about any reaction where the injection is given, or any new symptom. These are not all the possible side effects.

You may report side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or www.fda.gov/medwatch.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of levocarnitine in pregnant women, and its use while breastfeeding has not been specifically studied. There is no FDA-reviewed information on the combined Lipo-C injection during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell your provider if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.

The exact ingredients in Lipo-C differ between pharmacies. Check the pharmacy label of your preparation, and ask your provider or the pharmacy about any ingredient you are unsure of.
