Sermorelin is a lab-made analog of the first 29 amino acids of human growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH), a hormone made in the brain. It signals the pituitary gland to release the body's own growth hormone. Published studies of sermorelin used injections, and how well it is absorbed from a tablet that dissolves in the mouth has not been established in FDA-reviewed studies. How any one person responds varies, and your provider explains what this means for you.
A provider may consider sermorelin ODT for some adults after reviewing their health history, current medicines and goals. It is not for anyone allergic to sermorelin or any ingredient in the tablet, and its safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established through FDA review. Your provider decides.

Sermorelin is a lab-made analog of growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH), a compound that signals the pituitary gland to release the body's own growth hormone. Sermorelin ODT is a compounded orally disintegrating tablet: it is made to dissolve in the mouth rather than be swallowed whole or injected. It is prepared for an individual patient by a state-licensed pharmacy, is not FDA-approved, and is prescribed only if a licensed provider decides it is appropriate.
No. The only FDA-approved sermorelin products were GEREF (sermorelin acetate) injections: one for idiopathic growth hormone deficiency in children with growth failure, and one for testing pituitary function. The maker discontinued both in 2008, and the FDA withdrew the approvals in 2009. In 2013 the FDA determined that they were not withdrawn for reasons of safety or effectiveness. No oral or dissolving form was ever approved.
This has not been established. The published studies of sermorelin, including those the FDA reviewed for GEREF, used injections. We found no published studies in people that measured how much sermorelin reaches the bloodstream from a tablet dissolved in the mouth. Because of this, how a dissolving tablet compares with an injection is not known. Your provider can explain what this means before any decision is made.
No. The former brand-name product was an injection, and compounded sermorelin ODT is a different dosage form prepared by a state-licensed pharmacy for one patient under a prescription. It is not FDA-approved, the FDA does not review it for safety, effectiveness or quality, and it is not a generic version of, or equivalent to, any branded medication.
Side effects of sermorelin taken as a dissolving tablet have not been established in published studies. In published studies of sermorelin injection, it was generally well tolerated, and the most commonly reported side effects were short-lived facial flushing and pain where the injection was given. Tell your provider about any reaction, and report side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or www.fda.gov/medwatch. In an emergency, call 911.
