Sildenafil is an FDA-approved oral tablet for erectile dysfunction, prescribed online only if a licensed provider decides it is right for you. If prescribed, a licensed pharmacy dispenses your medication and ships it to you.
Sildenafil is a long-established prescription treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). With sexual stimulation, it can help you:
Firmer erections
Get and keep an erection firm enough for sex.
Works with arousal
It works when you're sexually aroused, so you stay in control of the moment.
Flexible timing
Usually taken about an hour before sex, and it can be taken from 30 minutes to 4 hours ahead.
Decades of use
Prescribed for ED for more than 25 years.
Individual results vary. Benefits are not guaranteed and depend on your provider's evaluation and your plan.
Understanding Sildenafil
What to know first.
Approved use
Sildenafil tablets are FDA-approved to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). They are not indicated for use in women. Other sildenafil products are FDA-approved for a different condition, pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs); they are separate medicines and must not be combined with sildenafil for ED.
How it works
Sildenafil belongs to a group of medicines called PDE5 inhibitors. During sexual arousal the body releases nitric oxide, which raises a natural messenger (cGMP) that relaxes muscle tissue in the penis so blood can flow in; sildenafil slows the breakdown of that messenger. It has no effect without sexual stimulation, and how well it works varies from person to person.
Who it may be for
A licensed provider may consider sildenafil for adult men with erectile dysfunction after reviewing their heart health, blood pressure and current medicines. It is not for anyone who takes nitrates or riociguat, or for whom sexual activity is not advisable because of heart health. Your provider decides.
How it works
Three steps, all online.
01
Complete your online visit
Answer questions about your health history, medications and goals. Submitting a visit does not guarantee a prescription.
02
A licensed provider reviews
A provider licensed in your state decides whether treatment is appropriate for you, or recommends a different path.
03
If prescribed, delivered
A licensed pharmacy dispenses your medication and ships it to your door. Follow-up continues through the patient portal.

Is sildenafil FDA-approved, and how does the online visit work?
Yes. Sildenafil tablets are FDA-approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men. You complete a secure online health assessment about your symptoms, heart health and medicines; a licensed provider reviews it, may ask follow-up questions, and decides whether sildenafil is appropriate. Completing the assessment does not mean you will receive a prescription. If it is prescribed, a licensed pharmacy dispenses an FDA-approved sildenafil product and ships it to you, and your provider sets the dose.
Can I take sildenafil with nitrates or blood-pressure medicines?
Not with nitrates. Taking sildenafil with any nitrate medicine, such as nitroglycerin, or with street drugs called “poppers” such as amyl nitrate, amyl nitrite or butyl nitrate, can lower blood pressure dangerously; the same applies to riociguat, a guanylate cyclase stimulator. Alpha-blockers and other blood-pressure medicines can add to the blood-pressure-lowering effect, so your provider needs to know every medicine you take. If you ever need emergency care for a heart problem, tell the care team when you last took sildenafil.
What should I do if an erection lasts more than four hours?
Get emergency medical help right away. An erection that lasts more than four hours, painful or not, is called priapism and needs urgent treatment; without prompt care it can permanently damage the penis. Before starting, tell your provider if you have a deformed penis shape or Peyronie's disease, or a condition that can make priapism more likely, such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma or leukemia.
Is sildenafil safe for my heart?
Sexual activity carries a heart risk for people with heart disease, so your provider reviews your heart health and blood pressure before prescribing. The label notes there is little safety information for men who have had a heart attack, stroke or life-threatening irregular heartbeat in the last six months, or who have very low or uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart failure or unstable angina. Heart attack, stroke and sudden cardiac death have been reported after marketing; whether sildenafil caused them is not known. Get medical help for chest pain.
What about vision or hearing changes?
Rarely, men taking PDE5 inhibitors have reported sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, which may be a sign of an eye problem called NAION, or a sudden decrease or loss of hearing, sometimes with ringing in the ears and dizziness. If either happens, stop taking sildenafil and get medical help right away. Tell your provider beforehand if you have ever had NAION, have retinitis pigmentosa, or have a “crowded” optic disc. Mild, temporary changes such as a color tinge to vision are more common.
What are the common side effects?
The most common side effects are headache, flushing, upset stomach or indigestion, changes in vision such as a color tinge, blurring or sensitivity to light, stuffy nose, back pain, muscle aches, nausea, dizziness and rash. Most are mild to moderate and pass on their own. Tell your provider about any side effect that bothers you or does not go away, and call 911 in an emergency.
Does sildenafil protect against sexually transmitted diseases?
No. Sildenafil does not protect you or your partner from sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. Condoms and other safer-sex practices are still important if you or a partner may be at risk. Your licensed provider can talk with you about prevention and testing options as part of your care.
Important Safety Information — Sildenafil
What is it approved for?
Sildenafil tablets are FDA-approved to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). They are not indicated for use in women. Other sildenafil products are FDA-approved for a different condition, pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs); they are separate medicines and must not be combined with sildenafil for ED.
Do not use if
take any nitrate medicine, such as nitroglycerin, or nitrites in any form, including street drugs called “poppers” such as amyl nitrate, amyl nitrite or butyl nitrate;
take a guanylate cyclase stimulator such as riociguat;
are allergic to sildenafil or any ingredient in the tablets (rash and hives have been reported);
have been advised that sexual activity is not safe for you because of your heart health.
Before starting, tell your provider if
have or have had heart problems such as a heart attack, angina, heart failure or an irregular heartbeat, a narrowing that blocks blood flow out of the heart, or have had a stroke;
have low blood pressure, or high blood pressure that is not controlled;
have retinitis pigmentosa, a “crowded” optic disc, or have ever had severe vision loss, including an eye problem called NAION;
have liver problems or severe kidney problems;
have a blood cell problem such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma or leukemia, a bleeding problem, or stomach ulcers;
have a deformed penis shape or Peyronie's disease, or have had an erection that lasted more than four hours;
take an alpha-blocker or other blood-pressure medicine, another PDE5 inhibitor or ED treatment (including sildenafil products for pulmonary arterial hypertension), or medicines such as ritonavir, saquinavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole or erythromycin.
Serious side effects — get medical help right away
An erection that will not go away (priapism). If an erection lasts more than four hours, painful or not, get emergency medical help right away to help prevent lasting damage to the penis.
Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes. Stop taking sildenafil and get medical help right away. It may be a sign of an eye problem called NAION, which has been reported rarely with PDE5 inhibitors.
Sudden decrease or loss of hearing. Stop taking sildenafil and get medical help promptly. It may come with ringing in the ears and dizziness.
Heart problems. Heart attack, sudden cardiac death, irregular heartbeat, stroke and bleeding in the brain have been reported after marketing, mostly in men with existing heart risk factors; it is not known whether sildenafil caused them. If you have chest pain after taking a dose, get medical help right away.
Low blood pressure. Taking sildenafil with an alpha-blocker or other blood-pressure medicines can lower blood pressure further, which may cause dizziness or fainting. Ritonavir greatly raises sildenafil levels and has been linked to low blood pressure, fainting and prolonged erection.
Allergic reactions and bleeding. Rash and hives have been reported; stop and get medical help for any severe reaction. Bleeding events have also been reported, and safety in men with bleeding disorders or active stomach ulcers is not known.
Common side effects
Common side effects: headache, flushing, upset stomach or indigestion, changes in vision (a color tinge, blurring or sensitivity to light), stuffy nose, back pain, muscle aches, nausea, dizziness and rash. These are not all the possible side effects.
You may report side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or www.fda.gov/medwatch.
