  • Male pattern hair loss

  • Lowers DHT

Works by blocking the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, lowering DHT in the scalp and in the blood.

  • Takes continued use

The label says continued use is generally needed before any benefit is seen, and results vary from person to person.

  • Not for women or children

Not indicated for women or children, and not for women who are or may become pregnant.

  • Provider sets the dose

A licensed provider reviews your health history; if prescribed, a licensed pharmacy dispenses and ships it.

Understanding Finasteride

What to know first.

Approved use

Finasteride tablets are FDA-approved to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. They are not indicated for women or children, and their effectiveness for a receding hairline at the temples has not been established. A different finasteride product is approved separately for an enlarged prostate (BPH); this page covers the hair-loss product only.

How it works

Finasteride blocks an enzyme (type II 5-alpha-reductase) that converts testosterone into a related hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), lowering DHT in the scalp and in the blood. According to the label, continued use for three months or more is generally needed before any benefit is seen, results vary from person to person, and the effect reverses within about twelve months of stopping.

Who it may be for

A licensed provider may consider finasteride for adult men with male pattern hair loss after reviewing their health history, including prostate health, mood history and any plans to have children. It is not for women or children, and women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets. Your provider decides.

FAQ

Good questions. Clear answers.

How long does it take to see results?

Hair grows slowly, so patience matters. According to the label, continued use for three months or more is generally needed before any benefit is seen, and results vary from person to person. The label also states that stopping treatment leads to reversal of the effect within twelve months, and that effectiveness for a receding hairline at the temples has not been established. Your provider follows up with you over time.

Can women take or handle finasteride?

No. Finasteride is approved for men only and is contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant: if the medicine reaches a pregnant woman it may cause abnormal development of the external genitals of a male baby. Women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets. Intact tablets are coated, which prevents contact with the active ingredient during normal handling as long as they are not broken or crushed.

Can finasteride affect a PSA test or prostate cancer screening?

Yes. Finasteride lowers PSA, a blood test used in prostate cancer screening, so tell any provider who orders a PSA test that you take it. While on finasteride, any confirmed rise in PSA from its lowest value may signal prostate cancer and should be evaluated, even if the result is still within the normal range. The label also notes that medicines in this class (5-alpha-reductase inhibitors) may increase the risk of a more serious, high-grade form of prostate cancer.

What sexual side effects can finasteride cause?

In clinical trials the most common side effects were decreased sex drive, trouble getting or keeping an erection, and ejaculation problems, including a smaller amount of semen. After marketing, some men reported sexual side effects that continued after they stopped the medicine, and male infertility or poor semen quality has been reported, which improved after stopping in reported cases. Tell your provider about any change, and before starting if you plan to have children.

Can finasteride affect my mood?

Depression and suicidal thoughts or behavior have been reported after marketing in men taking finasteride; the label notes that the medicine's independent role in these reports is not known. Tell your provider right away about any change in mood, and tell them before starting if you have ever had depression or thoughts of suicide. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988, or call 911 in an emergency.

Can finasteride cause breast changes?

Breast tenderness and enlargement have been reported in men taking finasteride, and male breast cancer has been reported rarely. Tell your provider promptly about any lump, pain, nipple discharge or other change in your breasts. Other reported effects include testicular pain and allergic reactions such as rash, itching, hives and swelling of the lips or face.

How does the online visit work?

You complete a secure online health assessment about your hair loss, health history and medicines. A licensed provider reviews it, may ask follow-up questions, and decides whether treatment is appropriate. Completing the assessment does not mean you will receive a prescription. If finasteride is prescribed, a licensed pharmacy dispenses it and ships it to you, and your provider sets the dose and follows up with you.
